“Let’s bring poetry to 21st Century music making!” - Christian Fergo
The critically acclaimed classical guitarist Christian Fergo commits himself to preserving the tradition of the guitar's golden age. His artistry is defined by his passion for the aesthetics of Francisco Tarrega and Andres Segovia. His refined musicianship and detailed technique is especially poignant in his interpretations of the late romantic Spanish repertoire.
He has worked with some of the finest musicians of the 20th Century, such as Alicia de Larrocha and Claudio Abbado. As a soloist and chamber musician, he gives concerts throughout Europe and has performed amongst others with conductor Ariel Zuckermann, Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, Lucerne Festival Orchestra, tenor Julian Pregardien, bass Rene Perler and cellist Mattia Zappa. He has recorded several albums for Challenge Records International and a DVD for EuroArts.
In addition, he is a guest lecturer at different music academies such as Lucerne Academy, Switzerland and Maynooth University, Ireland.
His concerts have led him to performances in venues such as National Concert Hall Ireland, Tivoli Concert Hall Copenhagen, Parco de la Musica Rome and Culture and Congress Hall Lucerne.
Born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1980 Christian Fergo began to play the guitar as a child under the tutelage of John Jacobsen. At the age of 17 he was accepted at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in the class of Lars Trier where he later graduated with distinction.
In 2003, he met the German guitarist and professor Frank Bungarten, which paved the way for further studies. Studying with professor Bungarten was a milestone in his musical perception and technical development and made him fundamentally change his guitar technique.
During his studies he was invited to play at the Lucerne Festival with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra conducted by Claudio Abbado. Later that year he joined the orchestra once again for concerts in Rome.
He graduated in the summer of 2007, performing as soloist in Joaquin Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra and conductor Ariel Zuckermann for which he was awarded a diploma with distinction. The Lucerne Times called him an “outstanding young soloist” and wrote about him: “Christian Fergo showed a highly sensitive musicality and very detailed technique”.
Furthermore, he took part in masterclasses with international artists such as the lutenist Hopkinson Smith, guitarists David Russell and Paul Galbraith, pianists Alicia De Larrocha and Elisabeth Leonskaja and composer Niklas Sivelöv. Renowned Spanish guitarist Pepe Romero called his playing “beautiful...a wonderful sense for the music”.
Christian Fergo is also an enthusiastic chamber musician. He is co-founder of the guitar duo Morat-Fergo which premieres ground-breaking new arrangements of Mozart and Schubert with Swiss guitarist Raoul Morat. The Duo plays 9-string romantic guitars and has relased two albums with Challenge Records International which were received enthusiastically by the press calling it “A wonderful new recording. Highly recommended” (SRF2, Swiss Radio 2).
